How far apart should fence posts be?
Standard spacing is 2.4 m (8 ft) centre-to-centre for most residential fences. In wind-prone or exposed areas, reduce to 1.8 m (6 ft).
How deep should fence posts be?
Bury one-third of total post length. For a 1.8 m (6 ft) fence, use 2.4 m (8 ft) posts buried 600 mm (2 ft). In cold climates, go below the frost line.
How much does a fence cost?
Materials only: wood privacy fence costs $12-$25 per linear foot, vinyl $20-$40, chain link $7-$15. Professional installation typically doubles the cost. A 150 ft perimeter fence costs $2,000-$8,000+ depending on material and height.
What's the best wood for fences?
Cedar is the most popular: naturally rot-resistant, lasts 15-20 years without treatment. Pressure-treated pine is cheapest and lasts 10-15 years. Redwood is premium at 20+ years. Avoid untreated spruce/pine outdoors — it rots within 3-5 years.
How many bags of concrete per fence post?
Standard 4x4 posts in 250 mm (10 in) diameter holes need 1-2 bags of 36 kg (80 lb) concrete each. For 6x6 posts or 300 mm (12 in) holes, use 3 bags. Set posts at least 600 mm (24 in) deep, or 1/3 of total post length.
